What materials are used for the Catifa Carta chair?

The shell of Catifa Carta is made from PaperShell, a new and revolutionary material derived from wood waste. PaperShell is the result of advanced scientific research that introduces an innovative process, significantly reducing the product's environmental impact. Arper is the first design company to use this material for a furniture product. 
The base is made with a frame in aluminum or painted steel. 

What is PaperShell?

PaperShell is a composite material based on kraft paper and a biobinder (natural resines), layered and pressed together, to form a thoroughly new material, that carries the name of the company itself: PaperShell, a Swedish start-up that was born in 2021 from the idea of the two founding partners, Anders Breitholtz and Mathieu Gustafsson, with the core belief that the solution to the climate crisis and a sustainable management of resources is found in nature.  This material is so solid and durable that it can become the shell of a chair, for example, but also components for electronics and automotive, snowboards and much more. Objects we know, but with a completely new impact on the environment. PaperShell dramatically reduces an object's impact on the environment by doing what trees - which PaperShell is derived from - do most naturally: it retains, technically "sequesters", carbon dioxide. The carbon sequestration potential of one kilogram of PaperShell is about 1.5 kilograms of CO2 equivalent. Ultimately PaperShell is a carbon sink, which means that it sequesters more CO2 that it releases during its production process. 

What are the benefits of using PaperShell material instead of FSC wood?

There are two different dimensions. While FSC ensures sustainable forest management, PaperShell targets CO2 sequestration. One thing does not exclude the other: as a matter of fact, while the raw material (kraft paper) is FSC certified, PaperShell is currently finalizing its certification process.

What kind of glue is used to compact the paper?

The shell is crafted without the use of any glue. Each paper sheet is impregnated with water and a natural-based binder, ensuring both structural integrity and environmental friendliness.

Is the production process sustainable?

The paper used to produce PaperShell is kraft paper. No trees are explicitly cut to produce this, since it is made out of residues from Swedish wood production and timber by-products like sawdust, chips, and branches, which are then processed into the pulp, that is used for PaperShell production. Currently, PaperShell utilizes virgin wood waste for the materials and is investigating the possibility of incorporating recycled paper or alternative sources. How does the final product become resistant?

The final product is the outcome of a molding process that involves a diverse interplay of parameters such as heat, pressure, and humidity. PaperShell provides the strength and comfort essential to Catifa’s now iconic, tridimensional silhouette.

Is Catifa Carta available in multiple colors or finishes?

The shell of Catifa Carta is available in a coffee color, and the base comes in three different versions: a four-leg steel frame in black, a sled steel frame in black and rust, and a black aluminum trestle base with or without wheels.

Is Catifa Carta suitable for outdoor use?

Catifa Carta is designed for indoor use.

What are the dimensions of the Catifa Carta chair?

How will Catifa Carta’s end of life be managed?

The end-of-life management of the product is key to be regenerative and utilize the full carbon potential of PaperShell. When it comes to the end of life of an object, PaperShell material allows for a sustainable alternative to traditional incineration: the pyrolysis process. This burning process happens in absence of oxygen, hence avoiding the production of CO2 that would happen with a standard incineration process. Thanks to pyrolysis, CO2 is no longer released in the atmosphere, instead it remains densely stored in the structure of the material resulting from pyrolysis, called Biochar.  

Biochar is made up of up to 90% carbon, which locks CO2 effectively, avoiding its release into the atmosphere. Science has proven that for every ton of carbon stored in biochar, about 3.67 tons of CO2 are prevented from entering the atmosphere. Biochar not only sequesters carbon but also improves soil health and reduces greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to standard incineration practices significantly. As a matter of fact, the key contributions of this project to emission mitigation are two: the avoidance of fossil carbon usage for plastic production through material substitution and the capability to sequester CO2 and store it in the ground. On top of it, another important aspect to take into consideration is the avoidance of emissions generated by the traditional production of soil amendment products.

How do I clean and maintain my Catifa Carta chair?

To keep your Catifa Carta in optimal condition, we recommend following these care instructions for the different materials used in the product: 

PaperShell: Dust and common stains can be removed using a solution of water and well-diluted neutral soap. Clean and remove any substance or liquid that accidentally falls on the surface as soon as possible to prevent damage to the product. It is absolutely necessary to avoid the use of commercial stain removers, aggressive detergents or those containing bleach, furniture or floor waxes, solvents, or abrasive products for cleaning. Use a soft cloth and clean with gentle circular movements (particularly for matte finishes, as overly aggressive action can cause shiny streaks). Avoid sponges and scouring pads made of synthetic fibers or metal that could irreparably scratch the surfaces. Always dry the surfaces with a dry cloth. In case of doubt, test the cleaning solution on a hidden part to check the result, waiting at least 24 hours for any problems to arise. The material will change color over time, especially if exposed to sunlight; this should be considered a distinctive feature that attests to its natural beauty. Periodic and correct maintenance slows this process and prolongs the product’s lifespan. 

Chromed, anodized or lacquered surfaces: clean using specific products like standard home detergents diluted in lukewarm water. Do not use abrasive products or products containing acids or bleach. Do not use synthetic fiber or metal sponges or pads which may scratch the surfaces. Rinse thoroughly to prevent product residues from damaging the special finishing causing tarnish or oxidation. After rinsing, dry with a suede cloth. Polishing products for chromed or lacquered surfaces should not be used: they should only be used by trained staff and with the outmost care since the polishing process may irreparably damage the surfaces. 

To ensure a safe use of the product, please regularly make sure all the connecting fastenings are tightened securely. 

Is Catifa Carta covered by a warranty?

Catifa Carta is covered by a 24-month warranty for conformity defects from the date of delivery, as per current EU regulations. 

We warrant that the product was manufactured using quality materials and the best technologies available in the market. We disclaim any liability for damages caused to persons and/or objects due to improper use of the product.

What payment methods are accepted? 

You can pay with a credit card or prepaid card from any international network (Visa, Mastercard, American Express). We do not accept cash, checks, COD, or bank transfers. 

Are VAT and taxes included in the final price? 

Yes, they are already included in the final price of your order. You won’t need to pay anything upon delivery.

Can I modify or cancel an order? 

If the order has already been processed, it will no longer be possible to modify or cancel it. You will need to wait for delivery and proceed with a possible return and/or repurchase. Please refer to our return policy for further details.

Can I request an invoice for my order?

What are the shipping options?

In addition to standard shipping, you can choose our White Gloves delivery service, proposed to offer a hassle-free experience.

With the White Gloves service, your Catifa Carta will be delivered to the specified floor, carefully assembled, and all packaging will be responsibly removed and disposed of. This service allows you to enjoy your Catifa Carta immediately.

What’s the shipping cost?

The cost of standard shipping is €10 per item shipped. For the White Gloves option, which includes delivery to the specified floor, assembly, and packaging removal, the shipping cost is €30 per item. Whichever shipping option you choose, the total cost will be specified during checkout.

What are the delivery times for Catifa Carta?

Delivery times may vary depending on product availability. If the chair is in stock, shipping typically occurs within 14 business days. We strive to meet the expected delivery times, but during peak periods or due to force majeure, there may be slight delays.

How can I request delivery to the specified floor?

Delivery to the specified floor is included when you choose the White Gloves shipping option.

How can I track my order?

Once your order is shipped, the courier will contact you, and you will receive an email with a link to track your package status.

What should I do when I receive my order?

We recommend carefully checking:

  • that the number of packages delivered matches the details on the shipping document you received via email;
  • that the labels on the packages display your name and address;
  • that the packaging is intact, not damaged, and not wet;
  • that the package seals (adhesive tape or plastic straps) have not been tampered with or altered in any way.

If your order falls under any of the above cases, we recommend noting it on the courier's delivery slip by writing "Delivery accepted with reservation" and specifying the reasons.

I didn’t receive the order confirmation email. What should I do?

If the confirmation message was displayed during purchase, we recommend checking your spam folder. If you still cannot find the order confirmation email, please contact our customer service by filling out the contact form.

I can't find my country in the available shipping destinations. What should I do?

We are present worldwide through a network of authorized retailers. If purchasing online from your country is not available, you can contact the nearest official retailer to request a quote and purchase your Catifa Carta in-store.

What is the return policy for Catifa Carta and how do I make a return?

If for any reason you're not satisfied with your purchase, you can return the chair within 14 days of delivery, provided it is in perfect condition. Shipping will be at your expense.

I received a wrong or a damaged product, what should I do?

We’re sorry if you received a wrong or a defected product! Please contact our customer service and provide as many details as possible (order number, item, information about the wrong or defective product, etc.) so we can help resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

How do I make an exchange?

If for any reason you wish to exchange the purchased item, please return it for a refund and place a new order within 14 days of delivery. For more details, please refer to our terms of sale.

In case of return, how and when will I be refunded? 

Once we receive your return, we will send you an email confirming the refund. All returned items will be refunded to the payment method used for the purchase (credit card, prepaid card, etc.). The amount will be available in your account within 5-10 business days, depending on your bank’s processing times.
